Saturn has a giant hexagon at its north pole, and it is not a camera trick.

The pattern is a long-lasting cloud formation wrapped around Saturn’s north pole. It sits near 78 degrees north latitude and has been observed as an unusually crisp, six-sided shape in the planet’s atmosphere.

Each side of the hexagon is about 14,500 kilometers, or roughly 9,000 miles, long. That makes a single side wider than Earth. The structure is also hundreds of kilometers tall, so this is not a small marking painted onto the clouds. It is a huge atmospheric system.

Scientists generally connect the shape to a fast jet stream in Saturn’s upper atmosphere. Winds in and around the pattern can move at roughly 320 kilometers per hour, or about 200 miles per hour. The hexagon rotates with a period close to Saturn’s radio rotation period, about 10 hours, 39 minutes, and 24 seconds.

What makes it especially strange is how stable it appears. Many cloud features drift, deform, or vanish, but Saturn’s north-pole hexagon has stayed recognizable across observations. It is one of those real solar-system details that sounds invented until you see the images.
